Biographic Sketch
David Cook is an ordained United Methodist pastor who has served churches in California, Alabama, and Virginia. He was raised in an Army family and finished high school in Tuscumbia, Alabama. He attended Birmingham-Southern College where he earned a BA Degree in Religion and Philosophy. He attended seminary at Claremont School of Theology in California. He transferred to Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, GA where he graduated with a Master's Degree in Divinity.
David is married to the former Barbra Washburn of Tuscumbia, Alabama. They have three children, and have also served as foster parents in Alabama.
As a pastor in Alabama, David pioneered the use of small groups for marriage enrichment in his congregations. He counseled with victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. He and his wife successfully intervened in several crisis situations.
After serving churches in Alabama and working as a National Guard chaplain, David was endorsed as a full-time US Army chaplain. He served twenty years as a military chaplain in a variety of positions. At four of his assignments he worked as the Family Life Chaplain where he counseled soldiers, family members, and Department of Defense civilians. David not only counseled people in crisis situations, he also instituted small group sessions to assist victims in finding emotional healing. While serving in Brooklyn, NY, David worked with small groups seeking healing after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.
In college and seminary David focused on classes in counseling. The US Army provided additional training in Domestic Abuse, Drug and Alcohol Addiction, Hospital Ministry, Sexual Harassment Prevention, Suicide Prevention/Intervention, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Sexual Assault Ministry, Use of Genograms in Counseling, Grief Counseling, Care for Care-givers, and other helpful classes.
After military retirement David was selected in November 2005 by the Crime Victims Advocacy Council, Atlanta, GA, which was seeking chaplains to counsel victims of crime. This organization provided additional training specific to crime victims, and continues to provide supervision and training for his work.
David is appointed by the North Alabama United Methodist Conference as a Crime Victims' Chaplain. In February 2006 he founded the Peninsula Crime Victims Council, Inc., in Newport News, VA. He works closely with Virginia Commonwealth Attorneys and their staffs, as well as with other community organizations. The PCVC, a charitable non-profit corporation, provides free counseling, support group leadership, various classes, and referral services to over 150 local victims of crime.
In July 2007 David was appointed by the Virginia United Methodist Conference as half-time Pastor to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Hampton, VA.
